AC TRANSIT'S FINAL REDISTRICTING PUBLIC HEARING SET FOR WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 8
AC TRANSIT'S FINAL REDISTRICTING PUBLIC HEARING SET FOR WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 8
Public feedback is sought on two draft ward plans and two election sequencing options
OAKLAND, Calif. – The Alameda-Contra Costa Transit District (AC Transit) is nearing the conclusion of its redistricting process. This transition will change AC Transit's current election system for its policymaking Board of Directors, which currently includes two At-large and five Ward seats, to an all-new seven-ward system. When redistricting is complete at the close of 2023, each of the seven elected Directors will represent a specific and more compact ward of residents.
Throughout the redistricting process, the Board has actively promoted public input through a series of workshops and public hearings. AC Transit riders and East Bay communities have played a significant role in shaping multiple draft ward maps, made available through an innovative online mapping tool.
As a result, during the fourth public hearing on October 25, the AC Transit Board of Directors moved forward with two draft ward map plans for further review and consideration:
- the Evergreen Plan, and
- the Jade Plan
The Board also presented two election sequencing options for the 2024 and 2026 election cycles, distributing the voting across the wards.
- Proposal One: Wards 1, 2, and 6 are scheduled to vote in 2024, while Wards 3, 4, 5, and 7 will vote in 2026.
- Proposal Two: assigns Wards 1, 6, and 7 for the 2024 elections and Wards 2, 3, 4, and 5 for the 2026 elections.
On Wednesday, November 8, AC Transit will host its final public hearing to collect feedback and engage in discussions. The public hearing will be hosted in person at the 2nd Floor Board Room of 1600 Franklin Street, Oakland, CA, or virtually:
- November 8 at 6:00 pm – via Zoom https://actransit.zoom.us/j/98487175063 : Webinar ID: 984 8717 5063
Following the November 8 meeting, the final selection of a ward map plan and election sequencing, as well as the adoption of an ordinance reflecting this choice, is slated for the December 13, 2023, Board of Directors meeting.
The public may also continue to submit comments via phone at (510) 891-7201 or email at myvoice@actransit.org. Draft ward maps and updated redistricting information are available at ACTransit.org/redistricting.
