HALFWAY TO NEW REPRESENTATION: WEIGH-IN NOW ON AC TRANSIT’S REDISTRICTING WARD MAPS

HALFWAY TO NEW REPRESENTATION: WEIGH-IN NOW ON AC TRANSIT’S REDISTRICTING WARD MAPS

October 02,2023

Redistricting represents the elimination of two At-large seats on the Board of Directors

OAKLAND, Calif. – The Alameda-Contra Costa Transit District (AC Transit) has reached the midpoint of our transition process to an all-new seven-ward election system. As a result, the transit district has closed submissions of the online ward mapping tool, designed to capture the public's input on ward boundary preferences.

Wagaman Strategies, AC Transit's demographer, has gathered all the submissions and will facilitate discussions on the draft maps at 6:00 p.m. on October 4. The draft ward map discussions will immediately follow the scheduled Board of Directors meeting. Board meetings are held in-person at 1600 Franklin Street, Oakland, CA, 2nd Floor Board Room or virtually via Zoom.

Community members are encouraged to share their thoughts on the draft ward maps before or during the public hearing by visiting ACTransit.org/redistricting

You can still provide feedback and comments regarding ward mapping and redistricting by voicemail at (510) 891‐7192 or emailing myvoice@actransit.org

As redistricting advances to its next phase, community members are encouraged to share their thoughts during the following redistricting workshops and hearings:

AC Transit wishes to emphasize that the redistricting process represents the elimination of two At-large seats on the Board of Directors. Presently, the policymaking Board is comprised of seven members, including two At-large Directors. Five Directors are elected to represent specific geographical "wards," while the At-large Directors represent the totality of our service areas. After the conclusion of the redistricting process, every Board Director will represent a specific and more compact ward of residents. These new wards will be a phased transition over the course of the 2024 and 2026 election cycles.
